Rank and Awards

   Colonel

Served as Group Commander or Executive Commander and held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel for One year will be required to receive the Colonel promotion.
 

 Lieutenant Colonel

Serving two years in Congress or serving one year in Squadron after retired from Squadron CO position will be rewarded with a promotion to Lieutenant Colonel.
 

 Major

Serving as Squadron CO qualifies an individual for immediate promotion to Major. Also, one year service with Congress warrants an promotion to Major
 

 Captain

18 months service with good attendance, demonstrated command ability shown through performance as a Flight Leader, and demonstrated service to the 23rd FG and to the WarBirds community qualifies an individual for promotion to Captain. Also, a change in position such squadron XO or any Congress position will warrant an immediate promotion to Captain.
 

 1st Lieutenant

One year service with good attendance and demonstrated command ability shown through performance as an Element Leader qualifies an individual for promotion to 1st Lieutenant.
 

 2nd Lieutenant


All pilots start at this Rank.
 

 Air Force Cross

Exceptionally valorous actions.
Required majority vote from Group HQ review panel.

 

 Silver Star

Awarded for gallantry in action. Series requirements: 10+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended. or Frame requirements: 5+ kills in a single S3 frame without loss of aircraft.

 

 
Distinguished Flying Cross

Awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight. Series requirements: 5+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended. or Frame requirements: 3+ kills in a single S3 frame without loss of aircraft.

 

 Bronze Star

Awarded for heroic actions involving the risk of life. Series requirements: 2+ kills in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft, or similar feat. Five frames must be attended.

 

 Air Medal

Awarded for heroic actions involving the risk of life. Series requirements: Flying in an S3 series without the loss of a single aircraft. Four of five frames must be attended.
  

 

 Combat Readiness Medal


Awarded for continuous readiness for combat as shown by participation in 23rd Fighter Group events.
   

 

 Golden Twinkie Award

This award is given by the Group Commander to the pilot who saves his bacon most often during combat. This is a spot award and every pilot is highly encouraged to strive for this award. The Group Commander must live and so must the saving pilot. This award requires skill and determination. A watchful eye and a steady bead. Shoot straight and fly fast.
